Stop the Homelessness Cuts

26 Feburary 2024

The ASU has joined peak homelessness organisations to implore the Federal Government to properly fund the homelessness sector.

There is a housing crisis in Australia. Homelessness services are already overwhelmed, turning away 295 people a day.

We need urgent government action. We need the new five-year national housing and homelessness agreement between the States and the Federal Government to fund the sector properly.

The federal government must:
  • Guarantee that funding for homelessness services will be increased by $450 million annually to meet demand,
  •   Extend the existing $73 million of funding which expires on 30 June 2024, and
  •   Index homelessness funding to keep up with rising costs.

If government fails to provide this extra funding, we will see 700 workers in the sector lose their jobs.

These workers care for some of the most vulnerable people in our community, and they can’t keep up with demand as it is. We need extra funding, not a $73 million funding cut.
