Portable Long Service Leave is coming soon!
4 May 2023
Both the SA and the NT Governments have made a commitment to
the ASU that they will introduce Portable Long Service Leave legislation before
the end of this year.
NORTHERN TERRITORY SCHEME
In February, your ASU Secretary Abbie Spencer and NT
Organiser Julie Fraser met with Minister Paul Kirby to talk about the timeline
for introducing Portable Long Service Leave for workers in the Social,
Community + Disability sector.
The Government is planning on introducing legislation mid-year
- so that isn't far away at all! We will keep members updated as the Bill
progresses.
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SCHEME
In March, South Australia's Attorney-General Kyam Maher
hosted a roundtable for the ASU, SACOSS, and employers to discuss the
implementation of Portable Long Service Leave for social, community, and
disability workers.
The Attorney- General has taken advice about the ASU's
preferred model (which is the existing Queensland PLSL Scheme) and his
department is now working on the costings and logistics for a similar scheme
for SA. Legislation is being drafted concurrently and we expect the Bill to be
introduced into Parliament towards the end of this year.
Congratulations to all the ASU members who have campaigned
for Portable Long Service Leave over the years - including our Vice President
Robert Habel, Branch Councillor Broadie Boaden and Neami Workplace Rep Anna
Tate pictured above with the Attorney-General.
We are so close to seeing this become a reality!
