ASU calls on NT Government to reverse fracking position

Your Australian Services Union SA + NT Branch Secretary, Abbie Spencer, has written to Chief Minister Natasha Fyles calling on the Territory Government to reverse its position on the approval of fracking in the Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory.
The ASU SA + NT Branch has a long-standing position opposing fracking in the Northern Territory. ASU members working across the Territory have made clear they do not support the Territory Government’s approval of fracking in the Beetaloo Basin due to the impacts on First Nations peoples, the climate and the Territory’s water and environment.
Climate change is already having a major impact on workers in the Northern Territory with increased heat and extreme weather. This is particularly impacting workers and communities living in remote communities, but is being felt Territory wide. There is no doubt that fracking in the NT will further exacerbate climate change.
The September 2022 Territory Labor Conference of rank-and-file delegates representing NT ALP members and affiliated trade union delegates (including delegates from the ASU) opposed fracking in the Beetaloo Basin in 11 separate motions, all of which were carried by majority of the Conference.
The ASU encourages members to continue to raise their concerns about fracking in the Northern Territory with the Territory and Federal Governments.
The ASU stands in solidarity with First Nations people and the broader community in their campaign to stop fracking in the Northern Territory.
